The Eucalypti Waltzes (1879): Australian Piano Sheet Music
The Eucalypti Waltzes: Australian Piano Music from Walter D. Cope
The Eucalypti: Waltzes for Pianoforte by Walter D. Cope is a striking example of Australian sheet music from the late nineteenth century. Published in Sydney by J. R. Clarke and catalogued by the National Library of Australia with the date [1879], the work belongs to an era when the piano occupied an important place in domestic music-making. Waltzes such as these were not merely concert pieces; they were music intended to be purchased, taken home, placed on the piano and played.
The title itself gives the work a distinctly Australian identity. Rather than borrowing exclusively from European imagery, The Eucalypti invokes the eucalyptus tree and the Australian landscape. Its illustrated cover reinforces that association, presenting the music as both a fashionable set of pianoforte waltzes and a locally identifiable cultural object. The music nevertheless sits comfortably within the nineteenth-century European waltz tradition, with flowing triple-time movement, contrasting sections, dynamic markings and passages designed to give the pianist opportunities for both graceful expression and more brilliant playing.
For the modern player, the score is particularly interesting because it survives not simply as an historical reference, but as playable music. The notation provides a direct connection with the musical habits of its period: recurring accompaniment patterns, lyrical upper-register melodies, changes in dynamics and tempo, and the familiar rhythmic propulsion of the waltz. It offers the opportunity to experience Australian musical history through performance rather than observation alone.

Restoring The Eucalypti Waltzes
This restoration began with a picture rather than a piece of music. Trove featured the wonderfully Australian illustrated cover of The Eucalypti Waltzes, with its eucalyptus landscape overlooking the water. The cover was sufficiently intriguing to prompt a search for the music behind it.
That search uncovered another digitised copy in Trove. Its cover was considerably less glamorous, but importantly, it provided the surviving musical pages needed to return the work to the piano. The Kurtz Vintage Vibes edition therefore brings material from these sources back together: the decorative historical presentation that first attracted our attention and the score that allows Walter D. Cope's music to be played again.
The surviving pages were digitally remastered individually, removing the aged paper background and improving the clarity and consistency of the printed notation while retaining the notes, dynamics, key signatures, tempo directions and other musical information of the source. The pages were then prepared as clean A4 score sheets and assembled into a new printable PDF edition.
And the restoration did not end at the computer. Once assembled, the new score was printed, placed on the piano and played—returning a nineteenth-century Australian artefact to the purpose for which it was originally published.
